British Prime Minister Boris Johnson wants to admit some three million Hong Kong people to the United Kingdom if China actually adopts the new security law. Opponents fear that the law will strengthen China’s grip over Hong Kong liberties.

The British have a moral and political obligation to the people of Hong Kong because of their history. Johnson also wants to put pressure on China; Beijing does not want to lose the money flow generated by Hong Kong. And a third point is that Hong Kong is rich thanks to highly educated, hard working residents.

“So London wants to open the front door – and the back door, by the way.”

Another factor is that migrants from Hong Kong symbolize the new ‘Global Britain’ concept, with which Johnson likes to associate after Brexit.
