On Sunday, the European Union and the United Kingdom pledged rapid assistance to India, which is facing an unprecedented wave of coronavirus infections due to a mutated variant of the virus.
This announcement was made by President of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
At the request of the government in Delhi, The EU wants to bring oxygen and medicines to India as soon as possible. The UK is sending 600 medical devices, including hundreds of oxygen concentrators and ventilators to the former British colony. The first delivery from London is due to arrive in New Delhi on Tuesday.
Earlier on Sunday, the United States announced that it would immediately send resources to India, including raw materials for coronavirus vaccines. France announced that it would send oxygen supplies to India on its own initiative.
India is experiencing a severe health crisis as a result of a mutated variant of the coronavirus. Sunday, for the fourth day in a row, the country reported the world’s highest number of new coronavirus infections in a 24-hour period. Almost 350,000 new infections and 2,767 new coronavirus deaths were reported.
Due to the rapidly growing number of new coronavirus infections in the Asian country, several countries have restricted travel from India.
