April’s global steel production fallen 13 percent y/y Pin It

Globally, steel was produced in April in 13 percent less than in the same month last year. Due to the corona pandemic, large parts of the industry are still at a standstill, with consequences for the demand for steel.

Global production was estimated to be 137.1 million tons in April, the World Steel Association reports. Due to the pandemic, those figures are surrounded with more uncertainty than usual, the organization warns. They can therefore still be adjusted.

Steel production in India collapsed, falling 65.2 percent to 3.1 million tons. Significantly less steel was also produced in the European Union, the United States, Brazil and Turkey. Here, the pandemic resulted in an estimated production shrinkage of between 22 and 39 percent. In China, production rose a fraction to 85 million tons.
