Shell advises not to curb oil and gas production too soon Pin It

In a recent statement, the CEO of Shell, Mark van Beurden, has issued a warning about the potential dangers associated with lowering oil and gas production. Van Beurden expressed concerns over the negative consequences that could arise from a significant reduction in the production of these vital energy resources.

Van Beurden emphasized the critical role that oil and gas play in meeting the global energy demand. He pointed out that these resources currently satisfy a substantial portion of the world’s energy needs and support various sectors, including transportation, manufacturing, and heating. Therefore, a sudden reduction in their production could lead to severe economic repercussions and energy shortages.

The CEO highlighted the importance of a balanced energy transition, acknowledging the need to address climate change and shift towards cleaner energy sources. However, he cautioned against abrupt measures that could disrupt the stability of energy supply and harm global economies.

Instead, Van Beurden advocated for a gradual and well-planned energy transition that focuses on reducing emissions and investing in renewable energy technologies while maintaining a reliable supply of oil and gas. He stressed the significance of innovation and collaboration to drive the development of sustainable solutions.

Furthermore, Van Beurden emphasized the role of natural gas as a relatively cleaner fossil fuel compared to coal and oil. He explained that natural gas can serve as a bridge to a low-carbon future, as it produces fewer emissions when burned for energy. According to him, leveraging natural gas alongside renewable energy sources can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate climate change risks.

The CEO also acknowledged the concerns raised by environmental activists and the public regarding fossil fuels’ impact on climate change. He assured that Shell is committed to reducing its carbon footprint and has set ambitious targets for reducing emissions. The company aims to become a net-zero emissions energy business by 2050 or sooner, in line with the Paris Agreement goals.
