Retail chain news for the week Pin It

Tesco, Britain’s largest retailer, says 1,600 jobs are in danger of disappearing due to operational changes in stores, including the elimination of night shifts to replenish shelves. The group said it would allow overnight replenishment of stocks during the day in 36 large stores and 49 convenience stores. In 36 stores, the petrol stations will also be converted so that they can only pay at the pump at night.

Asda has been warned by trade union GMB that it has “no choice” but to proceed to a formal strike if its distribution workers reject the Issa brothers ‘ revised wage bid. The union has started a ballot among nearly 8,000 Asda employees over a new wage bid.

The annual food bill will increase by an average of 216 on average as the cost of living continues to affect the family budget, according to consulting firm Kantar. Annual food inflation has been 3.8% over the past four weeks, up from 3.5% in December, Kantar noted.
