CEO Mike Coupe resigns from British supermarket company Sainsbury, after being at the helm for six years. He will be succeeded in the beginning of June by Simon Roberts, who manages the retail and operational activities of the retail company.
Coupe had to deal with a setback last year, when the planned merger of Sainsbury with the British Walmart subsidiary Asda did not get approval from the British competition authorities. That plan came from Coupe and due to the failure of the deal doubts arose about his leadership and the strategy of Sainsbury, with a fall in the share price. According to Coupe, it is now the right time to make room for a successor.
