Delivery service Deliveroo will collect donations for local food banks in the UK. Consumers can donate unopened and still shelf-life food. Via the temporary website collecteroo.uk a collection order can be created until November 28th. The food will then be collected between 12 and 17 December.
The partnership is with the charity Food Trust, which has food banks across the UK. Deliveroo’s initiative aims to make it easier for people to donate, for example for people who cannot easily leave their homes to donate via supermarket drop-off points. Danni Malone, director of network programs and innovation at Trussell Trust, said: “food banks in the Trussell Trust Network are facing the harshest winter to date and expect to hand out more than 1.3 million emergency food parcels over the next six months. More than half a million of these are packages for children.”
The Trussell Trust expects a large increase in applications while less food is donated. The food banks themselves are also struggling with rising costs such as those of energy.
“All of these factors are making us need donations more than ever and that’s why we’re excited to be working with Deliveroo on their fundraising campaign this winter,” said Malone.
