Boris Johnson’s Conservative Party announced a vote of confidence against the British Prime Minister on Monday morning. It could cost Johnson his job, though he’s not afraid of it.
The vote of confidence will take place on Monday between 19.00 and 21.00. Johnson was informed of the vote on Sunday by party eminent Graham Brady.
In order for a vote of confidence to take place, 15 percent of the group (54 parliamentarians) had to support such a vote. That threshold has been reached, Brady announced.
Johnson needs a simple majority of 180 MPs to survive the vote. If he succeeds, he will secure his position for a year. In that year, a vote against him cannot be started again. If he does not survive the vote today, the election for a successor will follow.
Johnson has confidence in voting
The outcome will be announced immediately after the vote. The British Prime Minister looks forward to the vote with confidence. He “welcomes the opportunity “to tell his side of the story and” put an end to months of speculation ” about his position.
Johnson has the backing of Secretary of State Liz Truss. “The prime minister 100 percent certainly has my support in the vote and I strongly advise colleagues to do the same,” she says. Truss is mentioned in the aisles as a possible successor to Johnson.
Why exactly the vote is taking place today is not entirely clear. What is clear is that more and more parliamentarians want Johnson to leave because of the ‘partygate’ scandal. Johnson is accused of ignoring his own Corona rules during lockdown parties.
