Navigation service provider TomTom is expanding its existing partnership with Microsoft. This makes the company a leading supplier of navigation data for the Azure cloud platform from Microsoft and for Bing Maps. TomTom in turn makes Microsoft Azure as the preferred supplier in the field of cloud activities.
No financial details about the deal were reported. TomTom and Microsoft announced their collaboration for the first time in December 2016. The navigation service provider has been under spotlight lately, as Google is moving more and more to the navigation market.
TomTom became big with the development and sale of navigation devices for the automotive market, but later saw that they were overtaken by navigation apps on the smartphone. The company has been busy for some time to transform itself into a more all-round navigation service provider. In addition to the shrinking branch for navigation devices – which are still being made – TomTom now has to focus on the supply of digital maps and navigation software to automakers and traffic information.
