For fourth night in a row, skirmishes in suburban Paris

For fourth night in a row, skirmishes in suburban Paris Pin It

In the northern suburbs of Paris, there were skirmishes between young people and the police for the fourth night in a row. In a number of places the police were pelted with fireworks and in Nanterre a fire was started at a primary school.

Still, the unrest last night was less severe than in recent days, says correspondent Frank Renout.

The cause of the tensions is an incident on Saturday morning, when a motorcycle and police car collided in Villeneuve-la-Garenne. The motorcyclist is seriously injured in the hospital.

According to the police, they wanted to address the man because he was driving on the wrong side of the road without a helmet.

The tensions are mainly fueled by the bad living conditions and not directly by the strict quarantine measures, says Renout.

There is enormous poverty and unemployment in the suburbs. Last weekend we saw a line of hundreds of meters in front of a counter where free food was distributed. Many corona patients died in the department of Seine-Saint-Denis.

Due to the unrest, there is a lot of police in the neighbourhood. A handful of arrests have been made.
