Steel manufacturer Tata Steel delays the handling of cases of asbestos victims who have worked at the company. The steel company also does not want to settle collective claims, as a result of which former employees or their surviving relatives have to take long-term procedures to receive compensation.
Judges, independent experts and internal documents of Tata repeatedly shown that employees of the blast furnaces are exposed to asbestos, directly and indirectly. Of all the large companies where this has been the case, Tata Steel is the slowest to handle these matters. ‘Leader in a negative sense’, the steel company is referred to in documents from the Asbestos Victims Institute (IAS).
Tata Steel does not agree with the comments about ‘too long processing time’ of the claims. The company says it takes “responsibility” for asbestos claims from the past, takes a “generous” attitude and treats reports and claims “very carefully.”
