Commerzbank has not received a concrete offer from ING to start discussions about a possible takeover of the German bank. That is what Commerzbank CEO Martin Zielke said at the annual shareholders’ meeting of Germany’s second bank.
According to Zielke, there have been two meetings between him and ING CEO Ralph Hamers in the last twelve months. Zielke also said that he had regular contact with other bank chairmen at events.
Various media have reported that ING would be interested in a takeover of Commerzbank. The bank has even suggested moving its headquarters from Amsterdam to Frankfurt. ING never wanted to respond to these rumors. In April it was announced that a merger of Commerzbank and Deutsche Bank was canceled.
