The number of applications for benefits in the United Kingdom is rising again, after a limited decrease in June. According to the British statistical office, more than 94,000 applications for unemployment benefits were submitted last month.

The total number of applications now stands at some 2.7 million. Especially in April, many people were forced to ask the government for support. It was over million applications. In May the number of applications was also very high. In June, there was a limited decrease, with 68.500 applications.

Unemployment remained at a very low level in June, the most recent month for which this was measured. This is because many people who were out of work in the first months of the crisis did not immediately look for a new job. They were therefore not yet registered as unemployed. According to the statistics office, British unemployment in June was 3.8 percent, from 4.1 percent in May. In the second quarter as a whole, unemployment reached 3.9 percent.
