Frans Timmermans expressed his love for Great Britain in a letter. The letter from the EU commissioner with a view to the approaching Brexit was published in The Guardian on Thursday.
The Dutch politician says that his love for the country already started when he attended a British international school in Rome and has remained in his life ever since.
“I know you now. And I love you. For who you are and what you gave me. I’m like an old lover. I know your strengths and weaknesses. I know you can be generous but also stingy. I know you believe that you are unique and different. And of course you are in many ways, but perhaps less than you think. You will never stop referring to the rest of us as “the continent.” It helps you to create the distance that you think you need, “the letter says.
“It breaks my heart”
“You have decided to leave,” continues Timmermans, who calls all European countries unique. “It breaks my heart, but I respect that decision. You were in a battle over it, as you were always in a battle over the EU. I wish you had stuck to that, it looked good on you and kept us all in better shape. ”
Timmermans about the departure: “And the sad thing is, I see it hurts you. Because the two spirits will still be there even after you have left. ”The EU Commissioner concludes that family ties can never really be broken and that the country is always welcome to return.
